Chamber backs plan for Tullamore-Kilbeggan Road

TULLAMORE and District Chamber of Commerce has added its backing to a drive to restart the shelved project to build a new road linking Tullamore with Kilbeggan.

The road was seen as a critical piece of transport infrastructure when it was planned about ten years ago and though a route was identified and designed, it fell foul of the recession.

Cllr Dervill Dolan has instigated a move to seek an "immediate allocation of funding" from Transport Infrastructure Ireland for the road from Tullamore to the Dublin-Galway motorway.

"The proposed N52 Tullamore-Kilbeggan link road comprises approximately 4.6km of carriageway and will provide a link from the N52 Tullamore bypass to the M6 motorway at Kilbeggan and is expected to cost in the region of €30 million," Cllr Dolan said at the June meeting of Offaly Co. Council.

Anne Starling, President of Tullamroe and District Chamber of Commerce, said the new road was a vital transport link necessary for the growth of the county town.

In separate comments Ms Starling made at the recent Chamber Business Awards she said: "Improving the area's infrastructure is key to the future growth of Tullamore in areas such as the construction of a new link road to the M6 motorway, as promised over ten years ago, and the upgrading of rail links to Dublin and other major cities."
